NZ Caravan Buyer’s Guide
Thinking about buying a new caravan?
Start with how you travel, who is coming with you, what you can tow and how much comfort you want once you arrive. This abridged guide helps New Zealand buyers compare new Australian-made and USA-made caravans prepared for NZ use.
Where to start
The four decisions that shape the right caravan
1. Travel style
Weekend parks, long touring trips, family holidays, off-grid camps and semi-permanent living all point to different layouts.
2. Towing fit
Check tow rating, tow-ball load, payload, brake controller setup and the real loaded weight before falling in love with a floorplan.
3. Living space
Think beyond beds. Lounge comfort, bathroom access, storage, fridge size, kitchen space and wet-weather living matter on longer trips.
4. NZ preparation
Imported caravans need local preparation, compliance checks, practical handover advice and dealer support after delivery.

Towing and weights
Know what your vehicle can tow before you choose a layout
Numbers to confirm
Ask about tare, ATM, payload, tow-ball load and how accessories, water, food, bikes, tools and personal gear affect the loaded travel weight.
- Tow rating
- Ball weight
- Payload
- Brake controller
- Loaded weight
Buyer hint
If you are planning extended off-grid travel, keep a close eye on payload. Solar, lithium batteries, water, tools and outdoor gear are useful, but every upgrade adds weight somewhere.
NZ-ready preparation
Imported caravans should be prepared, checked and supported locally
Australian-made
Villa Caravans are Australian-made and suit buyers looking for robust compact touring, family and off-road focused options.
USA-made
Freedom Express and Alpha Wolf models are USA-made and suit buyers wanting larger interiors, slide-outs and strong value for space.
Prepared for New Zealand
Our caravans are not made in New Zealand. They are selected, checked and prepared for NZ use with practical support around Gas, Electrical, Self Containment and handover where applicable.
Layout decisions
Look past the brochure photos and test the daily living details
Sleeping
Check bed access, bunk length, privacy, mattress size and whether visitors or children will use the van long term.
Lounging
Try the seating position. The best layout is the one you will still enjoy on a wet evening after a long towing day.
Storage
Open every cupboard. Think about clothes, food, outdoor gear, hoses, tools, bedding, bikes and cleaning equipment.
Kitchen
Compare bench space, fridge size, pantry storage, microwave placement, outdoor cooking and how you actually eat when travelling.
Bathroom
Check shower size, toilet access, ventilation, towel storage and whether the bathroom can be used when the slide-out is closed.
Setup
Ask about levelling, stabilisers, awnings, entry step, battery monitoring, water filling and the handover process.
Buyer checklist
Questions to bring to the showroom
Quick glossary
Terms worth knowing before you buy
ATM
The maximum permitted loaded weight of the caravan. This includes the caravan, options, water, food, gear and everything packed for travel.
Tare
The caravan weight before personal gear and many loaded items. Always confirm what is included in the stated tare for the exact model.
Payload
The difference between tare and ATM. It is quickly used by water, batteries, accessories, tools, food and holiday gear.
Tow-ball load
The weight applied to the tow ball. It affects vehicle payload, towing balance and legal suitability.
Slide-out
A room extension that increases living space when parked. It should be tested for operation, access and how the caravan works when closed.
Self Containment
Requirements can change, so ask what applies to the exact caravan and how it is prepared for New Zealand use.
