PV ratings are Victron nominal figures. For 150V models, Victron specifies 150V as the absolute maximum in the coldest conditions and 145V as the start-up and operating maximum. A complete array design must also remain within the model's PV short-circuit-current limit.

How to read the model number

In a model such as SmartSolar MPPT 100/30, the first number is the maximum PV open-circuit voltage and the second is the maximum battery charge current. A 100/30 therefore accepts up to 100V PV open circuit and charges at up to 30A. It is designed for 12V or 24V battery banks.

Tr identifies the screw-terminal version. It does not mean MC4 and it does not automatically mean VE.Can. Check the selected variant and SKU when matching an existing Victron system.

Choosing the right controller

  1. Confirm battery-bank voltage. Match the controller to the system's 12V, 24V, 36V or 48V requirements. Do not assume every model supports every voltage.
  2. Calculate cold-weather panel Voc. Add the open-circuit voltage of panels wired in series and apply the panel manufacturer's cold-temperature correction. The corrected figure must stay below the controller's permitted PV voltage.
  3. Check array short-circuit current. Parallel strings increase current. Keep the designed array within the selected controller's PV short-circuit-current limit.
  4. Match available solar power. Use the nominal PV-power figures for the battery voltage as a practical comparison point. The controller can limit input power when additional PV power is connected, but voltage and current limits still apply.
  5. Set the correct battery profile. Confirm the battery manufacturer's charge voltages, temperature requirements and BMS instructions before commissioning.

Installation notes

Solar-controller selection depends on panel Voc, Isc, series and parallel layout, battery voltage, cable size, fusing and the required charge profile. Install the controller vertically on a suitable non-flammable surface with the terminals facing down and adequate ventilation. Protect the battery circuit with correctly sized over-current protection. If you are unsure, have the system designed or checked by an experienced Victron installer.

Does SmartSolar include Bluetooth?

Yes. The SmartSolar models on this page have built-in Bluetooth for the VictronConnect app. Comparable BlueSolar products do not have built-in Bluetooth.

Can I use these controllers with lithium batteries?

They can be configured for compatible lithium systems, but the charge profile and BMS requirements must match the battery manufacturer's instructions. Bluetooth does not replace correct system design or BMS integration.

Can I connect a 150V solar array to a 150V model?

Do not design to the label alone. For the 150V models listed here, Victron states a 150V absolute maximum under the coldest conditions and a 145V start-up and operating maximum. Calculate cold-weather panel Voc before installation.

What is the difference between SmartSolar and BlueSolar?

SmartSolar includes built-in Bluetooth for direct VictronConnect access. BlueSolar normally requires an additional VE.Direct Bluetooth Smart dongle for wireless app access. Both families use MPPT charging, but model specifications and communication options vary.
