The Victron Orion-Tr Smart Isolated is a Bluetooth-enabled DC-DC battery charger for charging a caravan, motorhome, campervan or marine service battery from an alternator or another DC source. Galvanic isolation keeps the input, output and case electrically separated, which can help avoid shared-negative and ground-loop problems in systems designed to require isolation.

How to select your model

  1. Match the input voltage to the starter battery or DC source you are charging from.
  2. Match the output voltage to the service battery you need to charge.
  3. Select a charge current that stays within the battery manufacturer's limits and the alternator's available capacity.
  4. Confirm that the installation specifically requires galvanic isolation. A non-isolated charger may suit systems designed around a shared negative.

Important: Voltage labels such as 12/24 describe the nominal source and service-battery systems. Use the detailed input and adjustable-output ranges above when checking compatibility.

Key features

  • 200V DC galvanic isolation between input, output and case
  • Adaptive three-stage Bulk, Absorption and Float charging

  • Engine-running detection for smart-alternator applications
  • Remote on/off connection for a switch or compatible control signal
  • Can operate as a configurable DC power supply
  • Models may be connected in parallel when the system is designed and protected according to Victron instructions
  • Operating range from -20°C to +55°C, with output derating above 40°C

Dimensions and weight

  • 220W to 280W models: 130 x 186 x 70 mm, 1.3 kg
  • 360W models with 12V input or output: 130 x 186 x 80 mm, 1.8 kg
  • 24/24-17A 400W model: 130 x 186 x 70 mm, 1.6 kg

Installation checks

Confirm battery chemistry, alternator output, isolation requirements, cable length, cable size, fuse protection, mounting orientation and ventilation before installation. The selected charge current must suit the service battery and the available alternator capacity. Follow the model-specific Victron manual for cable and fuse recommendations.

Remote control accessory: If the remote on/off signal is referenced to the secondary battery or a lithium BMS, use the Victron Orion-Tr isolated DC-DC charger remote cable.

Professional installation is recommended for vehicle, caravan and marine charging systems.

Frequently asked questions

What does isolated mean?

The input negative and output negative are electrically separated from each other and from the case. This is useful where the electrical design requires separated circuits or where a shared ground could create unwanted current paths.

Does it work with a smart alternator?

Yes. The Orion-Tr Smart includes configurable engine-running detection for smart-alternator systems.

Can it charge lithium batteries?

Yes, when configured with a charging profile that meets the battery manufacturer's requirements and installed with suitable cable and fuse protection.

Does the isolated Orion-Tr Smart have VE.Direct?

No. It uses Bluetooth and VictronConnect for local setup and monitoring, but it is not equipped with a VE.Direct port. VictronConnect also does not display input or output current for this model range.

Do I need the isolated or non-isolated version?

Choose isolated when the system design requires separated input and output negatives. If the source and service-battery systems are intended to share a common negative, a non-isolated charger may be the more appropriate option. Check with your installer if you are unsure.
