The Victron SmartShunt battery monitor gives you an accurate view of a battery bank without adding a separate display panel. Use the VictronConnect app on a phone or tablet to check battery voltage, current, state of charge, consumed amp-hours, time remaining, alarms and history. Choose from standard IP21 or water- and dust-resistant IP65 versions in 300A, 500A, 1000A and 2000A ratings.

Why use a SmartShunt?

  • Built-in Bluetooth: configure and monitor the system through the VictronConnect app.
  • No separate display: a practical choice when you want less cabling and dashboard clutter than a traditional panel-mounted battery monitor.
  • Battery history: review useful information such as deepest discharge, average discharge and charge/discharge cycles.
  • Auxiliary measurement: configure the Aux input for one additional function: second-battery voltage, battery-bank midpoint or temperature with the optional sensor.
  • Victron integration: connect to a compatible GX device and VRM using a separate VE.Direct cable, or share battery data with compatible devices through VE.Smart networking.

Choose the correct SmartShunt

Select the protection rating for the installation location, then choose an amperage rating that covers the highest current expected to pass between the battery bank and the complete DC system.

Option Protection Best suited to
Standard IP21 Dry, protected battery compartments and indoor installation areas
IP65 IP65, potted Locations needing greater resistance to water and dust
Rating Shunt specification Connection bolts Dimensions (H × W × D)
300A 300A / 50mV M8 Standard: 44 × 120 × 44mm; IP65: 44 × 120 × 38mm
500A 500A / 50mV M10 46 × 120 × 54mm
1000A 1000A / 50mV M10 68 × 168 × 75mm
2000A 2000A / 50mV M10 68 × 168 × 100mm

Do not select by battery capacity alone. Check the maximum combined charge and discharge current that will flow through the shunt, including inverter loads and charging sources. If the expected current is close to a model rating or the system has high surge loads, have the design checked by an experienced installer.

Installation and compatibility

The SmartShunt is installed in the negative connection of the main battery bank. Connect the battery negative to the BATTERY MINUS side. Connect the complete DC system, including loads, inverters, solar controllers and battery chargers, to the SYSTEM MINUS or LOAD MINUS side. No load or charging connection should bypass the shunt, otherwise that current will be missing from the state-of-charge calculation.

The fused Vbatt+ lead powers the monitor and provides battery-voltage measurement. After wiring, use VictronConnect to set the battery capacity and the correct charged-voltage and battery-profile values. Battery cabling, lugs, system fuses, the optional temperature sensor and the VE.Direct cable used for a GX connection are not included unless specifically stated with the selected accessory.

Standard SmartShunt models are IP21 and must be mounted in a dry location. Choose an IP65 model where the installation needs stronger water and dust resistance. IP65 does not remove the need for safe mounting, correctly sized high-current cables, secure terminals and suitable circuit protection.

Caravan, motorhome, marine and off-grid monitoring

SmartShunt suits 12V, 24V and 48V battery systems that remain within its 6.5 to 70V operating range. It can be configured for lithium, AGM, gel and flooded batteries using the battery manufacturer's correct settings. This makes it useful for caravan and motorhome house batteries, marine DC systems and larger off-grid battery banks.

For Auckland customers and buyers throughout New Zealand, select the required IP rating and amperage above. Browse our Victron battery monitors and shunts if you would prefer a BMV monitor with a dedicated display or need another system-monitoring option.

Frequently asked questions

Does the SmartShunt have a display?

No. Your phone or tablet acts as the display through the VictronConnect app. A compatible GX device can also show the data when connected by VE.Direct.

What is the difference between standard and IP65?

The standard model is rated IP21 and is intended for a dry, protected location. The potted IP65 version provides greater resistance to water and dust. Both ranges are available in 300A, 500A, 1000A and 2000A versions.

Which amperage should I choose?

Choose a rating that covers the maximum current expected through the battery negative connection. Consider inverter demand, DC loads and all charging sources. The 300A model uses M8 connections; the 500A, 1000A and 2000A models use M10 connections.

Can SmartShunt monitor a starter battery and battery temperature?

The Aux input can be assigned to second-battery voltage, midpoint voltage or battery temperature. It supports one of these auxiliary functions at a time, and temperature measurement requires the optional Victron temperature sensor.

Is a VE.Direct cable included?

A separate VE.Direct cable or VE.Direct-to-USB interface is required for a cabled connection to compatible GX or USB equipment. Bluetooth monitoring through VictronConnect does not require that cable.

Can it be used with lithium batteries?

Yes, when the SmartShunt settings match the lithium battery and BMS requirements. Correct battery capacity, charged voltage and synchronisation settings are essential for reliable state-of-charge information.
